Top ranked squash player visits Aria plus more Squash News

SQUASH at Aria had a slow start early on, with members not being able to field any teams for the Autumn Interclub Competition, however once it got going, we had a lot happening!

Our annual B Grade tournament was held at the end of April. With previous year’s numbers being on the low side (and trying to talk our members into filling spots), we decided to try something new to entice ‘out of towners’ to Aria. Advertising a doubles draw, alongside a singles draw had entries flooding in so fast that we were over a manageable number and had to cut registrations off 8 days early!

There were some amazing, comical and intense games of squash to watch with many matches going down to the wire. Thank you to the committee and members for making it all run smoothly.

Aria Squash Club are extremely grateful to our sponsors: Westpac, King Country Vets, Greenlea, King Country Honda, Silver Fern Farms, Farmlands, Kaianga Farm, Ipurua – South Devons*Wiltshires, CM & MS Carter. Thank you for your contributions.

An opportunity to expose school aged children to the sport of squash was co-ordinated in May, with Squash Waikato Junior Development Officer and NZ ranked #4 female player – Emma Millar, coming to Aria Squash Club. Piopio College, Piopio Primary School and Aria School were able to participate in 2x 1-hour sessions each, throughout the school day. The new transportable Squash walls had just arrived in the country and we were lucky enough to be the first to use them!

After school, Emma supported our Junior Coach and some of our regular Term 2 Junior Squash members, introducing some new ideas and activities to include to our club programme. It was such a fantastic experience, with the children providing positive feedback. It was so good, it sounds like we will get another opportunity to do it all again in Term 3.

Winter Interclub is well into the first round with two Aria Men’s teams and three ladies spread among teams at surrounding Clubs – Te Kuiti and Taumarunui.

Wednesday nights from May 16 – August 9, we welcome ladies to come along for a hit from 6.30pm onwards. Some equipment will be available. Beginners are welcome, with experienced members available to help, play and drill with.

Friday social nights are from 6.30pm with bar and kitchen facilities also available.
