Welcome to Piopio, A Thriving Village Nestled Between The
World Famous Waitomo Caves and The Rugged Taranaki Coast

Well what a season it was and one as a coach I throughly enjoyed. With an unbeaten run through pool play Piopio knocked off perennial front runners Taupō Sports for the first time in about 7 years and claimed the Hetet Shield off Taumarunui Eels down at Cherry Grove. The lads not only had the best defensive record for the competition but were racking up at least 40 points every home game.

This good run of form led to winning the Ron Bryers Trophy (1st round winners), retaining the JR Trophy against Waitete and also the Dempsey Munro Cup (Maniapoto teams).

With home quarters and semis at home Piopio drew fantastic crowds and racked up 100 points for with only 7 points against putting away both Waitomo/Tihoi and Taupō Sports.

The final against Taumarunui Eels was another kettle of fish however the weather turned it on and the town turned up in massive numbers to support the team. With a tight first half the boys finally broke free in the second to put Eels away 20 to 8 and bring home their first Championship title in about 40 years.

A massive thank you goes out to the Piopio RFC committee and volunteers as well as all the amazing supporters that showed up on the day.
