Happenings at Piopio Primary School
TERM 2 has seen several exciting learning opportunities, community sporting events, and property improvements happening.
FRUIT SCIENCE
The year 5 and 6 tamariki had a visit from a team of plant and food scientists running a workshop through Rangitahi Pathways. They did a science experiment with them to find out if the number of seeds in a kiwifruit would affect the weight, sweetness, and firmness of the fruit. Their favourite parts were:
Getting to eat the red kiwifruit
Mashing the kiwifruit to see how many seeds there were.
Using the device that measures the sugar percentage
Working in pairs.
They learned:
That red kiwifruit is yummy
That there are different colours of kiwifruit
That red kiwifruit is sweet
Based on their results, the more seeds in a kiwifruit, the bigger the fruit is.
Massive thanks to Rangitahi Pathways for facilitating this
fantastic workshop for us!!
CROSS COUNTRY
Piopio Primary joined with Aria School for our annual cross country. Our tamariki had been training everyday prior to the event on Monday the 12 of May. It was lovely to see our senior students supporting our new 5-year-olds to run their very first cross country. All our tamariki raced well and were well supported by whanau and friends.
NEW TURF
Our turf has had a refurbishment. Workmen were at Piopio Primary for three days cleaning, spraying and removing a significant amount of sand from our turf. This means that when classes are having PE lessons on the turf it is a much more enjoyable experience.
Happenings at Piopio Primary
Many of our sports teams use the turf for their weekly practices. This is now a much more enjoyable experience. Some
of the feedback we have had from the tamariki is:
"It feels like carpet."
"It’s blue like a swimming pool."
"I can't wait for netball practice now."
We are looking forward to our Matariki celebration later in the term
