Piopio ANZAC Commemoration

Piopio ANZAC Commemoration

Piopio and district residents turned out in brilliant sunshine for the annual ANZAC commemoration parade and service. Parade commander, Craig Barker of Mahoenui led the parade down Moa Street to the sound of bagpipes for the first time in many years. Bob Dawson was the piper and he also played during the wreath laying ceremony.

Craig was also guest speaker along with the College head students, Puhi Ngawaka and Cody Mortenson. The students gave insightful accounts of their own understanding and experience of the meaning of ANZAC whereas Craig, having served his country for 14 years in the military, gave a moving account of personal sacrifice and readjustment, often never mentioned.

The Last Post and Reveille were played by trumpeter Nathan Cocks, formally of Piopio. MC for the day was Gavin Todd. Following the service a light lunch was served in the Memorial Hall.

Our Piopio and district residents can again be proud of our ANZAC commemoration which involved many people in organising and participation.
