Mapara Wildlife Management Reserve

Mapara Wildlife Management Reserve

Moderate track. The loop takes about one hour but this may be extended further up the hill. Well marked.

Home of the rare and beautiful North Island Kokako, one of New Zealand’s most ancient birds. Kokako can be heard (best at dawn or later evening) from a moderate grade walking track through beautiful native forest. It is also possible to see them sometimes feeding near the small clearings. You will need to be vigilent as they are called the 'grey ghost' of the forst for a reason!

If it is dark you may see glowworms under banks and old fallen logs.

Access is from the Mapara South Road; turn left off State Highway 4 into Aratoro Road and then right into Mapara South Road. Access will be on the left. Approximately 25 minutes drive from Piopio.

There is a small information kiosk at the entrance to the track.
